About Daniel Menely, LMHC

Gottman Method Level 3 couples therapist. Direct, evidence-based, online nationwide.

I'm one of a small number of male therapists doing Gottman Method Level 3 couples work — and I've spent 15 years teaching expository writing at NYU, studying how people actually communicate, not just how they feel.

My clients are usually smart, self-aware, and completely stuck. They can name their patterns. They just can't stop them. That's exactly the problem the Gottman Method was built to solve.

I'm direct. I'll tell you what I actually think — not what's comfortable to hear, but what's actually useful.

Most of my caseload is couples — smart, self-aware people who know exactly what's happening in their relationship and can't stop it anyway. I also work with individuals carrying anxiety, burnout, relationship stress, and the kind of major life transitions that don't come with a clear path through. Everything I do is online, which means geography isn't a barrier — just a browser and a quiet room.

The Path That Led Here

My path to couples therapy ran through 15 years in the classroom. At NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, I taught expository writing — which is really a course in how people communicate: what they mean versus what they say, how arguments escalate, why some words land and others don’t.

That background shapes how I work. I notice language. I pay attention to what gets said and what gets avoided. And I came to therapy with a genuine skeptic’s eye — which is why the Gottman Method, with its 40-year evidence base, is the framework I trust.

My Approach

Therapy works best when it balances genuine understanding with practical action. I believe in the latter — not endless processing that leads nowhere.

For couples, I use the Gottman Method: a structured, research-backed framework that gives you real tools to interrupt conflict, rebuild trust, and measure whether things are actually changing. You’ll know therapy is working when you argue less frequently, recover more quickly when you do, and feel the distance start to close.

For individuals, the work is similar in spirit: figure out what’s actually happening, build something concrete, and get you moving.

A Note on Being a Male Therapist

For couples where one partner has felt pre-judged before walking in — like the outcome was settled before the first session — the dynamic in the room matters.

I’m not here to pick a side. I’m here to help both of you get somewhere. That’s a different starting position than some couples have experienced, and it tends to change what’s possible in the room.

The Personal Side

My dog Spooky — a gentle, 80-pound mix of ridgeback, boxer, mastiff, and pit bull — stops strangers on the street daily. She has never met a person she didn't immediately win over.
